Thailand Ranked Top Expat Destination
Friday, October 07, 2011

A preview of HSBC's forthcoming 2011 Expat Explorer survey shows that Thailand has become the most popular expat destination.

HSBC is due to release the full results of the Expat Explorer survey in late November, but the bank recently revealed some highlights of the upcoming report which shows that Thailand tops this year's expat league table when compared globally across economic and lifestyle factors. Egypt and Saudi Arabia were ranked second and third respectively.

The HSBC Expat Explorer survey, now in its fourth year, is the largest of its kind in the world and 3,385 expats from more than 100 countries have contributed to the poll this year.

Despite some significant global events in the past year, from economic turmoil to widespread political and social unrest, the survey preview reveals that expats remain fairly optimistic about the economic outlook in the country where they live. However, the results show that only 64% of expats intend to stay in their current country compared to 87% in 2010.

Nonetheless, expats are still tending to feel the economic benefits of their move abroad, with 63% reporting that they have more disposable income, compared to 56% in 2010.

The survey also finds that language barriers are becoming less problematic for expats with only 27% reporting this as an issue compared to 30% in 2010.

Furthermore, expats are less concerned about feeling lonely and missing their friends and family with only 31% reporting this in 2011, compared to 34% in 2010.

Seven new countries make it into the 2011 ranking, including Turkey, New Zealand, Brazil, Italy, Egypt, Vietnam and Japan, meaning that this year's survey now covers 31 countries around the world.
